Shine Bright

YOU ARE UNIQUE
Let your light shine!

There is no other human being just like you…

No one has your exact personality,
temperament, likes and dislikes, signature,
fingerprint, or life story. No one shares the same combination of gifts and talents that you do.

Think about that for a moment—there is no one else exactly like YOU.

And while we’re all different, we’re also all born with a unique purpose, a special meaning for our lives. I think we often assume that our purpose has to be big in order to be significant. But everything we do is significant and has a ripple effect, no matter how big or small it may seem.

Realize that you can shine bright and make a difference in the world, no matter who you are. Even your unique story, pain, or struggles can make a difference in the lives of others. It takes faith to believe that wherever you may be, right at this moment, your life matters and has meaning. There is always a greater purpose at work that is shaping, teaching, and molding you into the person you were meant to be.

Sometimes it is the difficulties, challenges, and painful events that give us the ability to shine the brightest. Even the little choices we make every day may not seem to matter at the moment, but turn out to matter the most. It is the simple things we can do that make a difference.

This reminds me of an elementary school crossing guard that I would pass every day while driving my kids to school. Every day, this man would enthusiastically wave and yell “Good Morning!” as the cars passed by him. With a big wide grin, he welcomed each child by name as he safely helped the children cross the street. His job may have seemed insignificant to many, but I believe his presence made an impression in the minds of those kids, us as parents, and countless others who he greeted every day. I think about him often and realize that, no matter what my purpose is in life, crossing guard or stay-at-home mom, I can make a difference and shine wherever I am.

Am I saying that we need to be happy all the time? Of course not, but despite how we feel or what we might be going through, we can make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Here are a few simple ideas to shine your light:

• When you do the dishes, think of all the things in your life that you are grateful for.
• As you fold the laundry, pray.
• Affirm one person and let them know how much they mean to you.
• Give a hug.
• Smile at someone.
• Extend a listening ear.
• Wipe away a tear.
• Give a nod that says, “I understand.”
• Do one thing that you love to do.
• When you find yourself thinking something positive about someone, tell them.

While all of these acts may seem insignificant, just one of them can make someone else’s day a little brighter. We never know what someone else is going through. And I guarantee it will brighten your day too.

Take a little time to think about how you can make a difference in other people’s lives. Create a vision for what that would look like.
