Dear Teen, I Will Love You When You’re at Your Worst
Dear Kids,
I know you are well aware of my love for you because I say “I love you” all the time. It’s so very true, but I worry that there may be times when you think I don’t love you- or I don’t love you as much. I worry you might even believe there are some pieces and parts of who you are that are deemed unlovable. And I especially worry that you think my love is conditional. That when I say “I love you no matter what” you don’t believe it, because how on earth could I love you if you did this or this or this.
But my dear child- if that were to be true, then it wouldn’t be love.
You see, love is strongest when we are weakest. When you love someone the way I love you, that love is immovable, impenetrable, unconditional, and forever indelible in my heart.
Love can coast through those times where things are fine and good and people are nice and life is easy. Love is quite simple when mistakes aren’t made or feelings aren’t hurt.
But when things get hard and painful and muddled, all the complex layers of love are revealed and love gets the chance to prove just how relentless and real it really is.
Even when we want to give up, let go, walk away, it’s love that never does.Click To Tweet
Love has this mysterious power to rise up in the throes of tests and tough times. When you love someone, truly love someone as I love you, it’s your unconditional love for them that carries you through the doors of forgiveness and strengthens your steps as you walk the broken road together. Love doesn’t disappear in our disappointments or fade when we fail. Instead, it grows in fortitude and resolve. Even when we want to give up, let go, walk away, it’s love that never does.
I will never give up, let go, or walk away. My love for you won’t let me do that.
So, listen carefully and believe what I say…
I will love you through your toughest times.
I will love you when you fall or fail.
I will love you through your weakest moments.
I will love you through every test and trial.
I will love you when you slam the doors.
I will love you through your hurt and hate.
I will love you no matter what you do.
I will love you through every bad mistake.
I will love you when you’ve lost your way.
I will love you when you’re so confused.
I will love you through your tears and pain.
I will love you through whatever you choose.
I will love you when you’re ugly and mean.
I will love you when you could care a less.
I will love you when you’re mad at me.
I will love you when you’re a mess.
I will love you when you’re tired and stressed.
I will love you when your sassy or sullen.
I will love you when you push me away.
I will love you when your heart’s been broken.
My dear child,
There’s nothing you can do to make me stop loving you.
Nothing.
And as I watch you grow and change-
My love will never falter, never fade.
Whatever you do, wherever you go, and whoever you become- my love for you will remain steadfast every day of your life. True enduring love is stubborn like that.
Through these crazy teen years, my love will prove itself well and you’ll learn just how fierce it can be.
It will shine through all your accomplishments and all your success, but more importantly, I want you to know that my love for you stays strong especially when you struggle.
So, no matter how unlovable you might feel, no matter how hard things get, no matter what happens in your life, I will never stop loving you.
I will love you when you are at your best, but most importantly, don’t ever forget-
I will love you when you’re at your worst.
